The ballon d'or is the biggest award giving to the most outstanding football player in the world over the course of a year. But what are the yardstick for giving out this awards? Is it by the number of trophies won? Is it by the number of goals scored? Is by the number of assist made? Or is by being the most popular figure in the game (like it has been in recent times).
One thing is sure, a player who manages to win more trophies with club and maybe countries and scored more goals will certainly win the ballon d'or. But do we have such player among the nominees or even anywhere else? Your guess is as good as mine.
So lets analyse the three nominees base on the following:
a. Trophies won
b. Goals scored
c. Assist registered.
1. TROPHIES WON:
when it come to the number trophies won this year, then we don't really have much of a problem picking the winner. Winning a five (UCL, BundesLiga, German cup, Uefa super cup, Fifa world Club cup) of the six trophies (bar the German super cup) conpeted for place Frank Ribery above others.
Messi won the La liga and the spanish super cup.
Ronaldo did not lift any trophy this year, coming as runners up in the league to Leo. So for trophies, the winner is Frank Ribery, Messi the first runner up, Ronaldo the second runner up.
2. GOALS SCORED: When it comes to number of Goals score in 2013, Ronaldo leads the park with a staggering ang mouthwatering 62 goals for both Club and country. He is closely followed the diminutive Argentine with 45 goals for both club and country. One would argue that Messi would exceed that mark if he hadn't been out injured, but thats not a case, as injuries are part of the game. Frank Ribery had a hand full of goal for club and country at 16 goal in 2013. So its Ronaldo who wins with Messi yet again the first runner up and Frank Ribery the second runner up. 3.
3. ASSIST MADE:
In 2013 Frank ribery was second in the assist chat to only Andres Iniesta at 14 assist. Messi was 2 shy at 12 while Cristiano Ronaldo had 9 assist So frank Ribery wins, Messi again comes second and Ronaldo come third. so cummulatively according to the above stats, its safe to say Frank Ribery should be crowned the Ballo d'or winner. All three nominees truely deserves it, but there can only be one winner.
It is of course this line of reasoning that offers a perfectly amicable chance to Franck Ribery. Yes, Critiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi scored more goals than the French man, but those goals eventually meant very little to the players or their clubs, and more importantly it was the Bayern forward that won all the trophies last season.
It was Franck Ribery who put Juventus to the sword in the quarter-finals; it was Franck Ribery who set up two of the three goals that led to Bayern's historical 3-0 win in deepest Barcelona; and it was Franck Ribery who made the pass to allow Arjen Robben to score that last-gasp winner in Wembley in the UCL. It was this Frenchman who had changed the fate of history for his club last season, and that is worth more than all the goals in the world.
